This document describes the work performed within work package 5 related to the evaluation of the proposed energy management system information model and optimization algorithm based on a building simulation using building models based on real-world measurements.
First, building simulation models were created. For this, a building simulation environment was set up being able to perform simulation-based evaluation as specified in Deliverable D1.1. Internal load profiles that represent a more realistic building behavior are used by combining occupancy schedules with standard profiles for electric and thermal loads.
Then, an evaluation of the optimization methods that were introduced in Deliverable 4.1 was performed. The evaluation of energy optimization methods is leveraging the building simulation environment and the set of defined building models. The evaluation workflow was performed for the simulation scenarios.
Finally, the results are analyzed and discussed. The main conclusion is that the evaluation of the proposed optimization methods shows that there is no real improvement for minimizing energy consumption, energy costs, and comfort deviation when this simulation environment with a well-adjusted HVAC configuration is used. However, there are some major benefits of using this approach, which will also be discussed in the upcoming cost/benefit analysis (see Deliverable 6.1). It is a generic approach that can be used in different buildings with different equipment and systems for energy supply, energy storage, and energy consumption in accordance with comfort satisfaction. The machine-readable semantics of the building services and the building structure can be used for other applications as well. Furthermore, comfort satisfaction plays a major role in the minimization process of the optimization compared to other optimization approaches that are primarily focused on cost reduction. In order to analyze the full potential of the approach, a simulation or a field study with more control services and data services as well as energy storage devices is required.
